Sports Week

We're looking at rugby this week. Rugby is a sport that England have had some real success in - winning some major competitions!

The first thing I'd like you to do is watch a bit of rugby! Have a look at the videos below. You don't have to watch the whole thing unless you'd like to but I want you to get a flavour for the sport. Think about the pitch, the kit, the players. What do you notice? Can you work out any of the rules?

Extended Highlights: England 19-7 New Zealand - Rugby World Cup 2019

Now you've watched a little rugby, I want us to focus on the rules.

Rugby can be tricky to understand and it can feel like there are a lot of rules to follow!

Luckily, I found a handy video that breaks the game down into small chunks to help you understand what's happening.

Have a look at the video below. You might like to make notes while you do! (Don't try to write everything down, just the most important parts)

Rugby for beginners: a guide to the rules of rugby union

Now, I'd like you to read through the document below. It goes back through a lot of the information from the video in simple chunks.

For your task today, I'd like you to create a poster, leaflet, book, PowerPoint or mind map explaining the rules of rugby.

You don't need to cover absolutely everything - just the main points about the pitch, the players, how you score, the aim of the game and important rules. Have fun and be creative!

Maths

Maths today is also rugby themed!

We're focusing on a topic and skills that we looked at earlier in Year 5 - area and perimeter!

Remember, perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape (you add the sides together using column addition)

Area is the inside of a shape (you multiply the length by the width using a written method for multiplication)

I recommend completing your work in your book rather than on the sheet as you'll have more space for your working out!

Just for fun!

Every day this week, I'm going to give you a task that is purely for fun! Remember that your mental health is important as well as your work so make sure that you're looking after yourselves too.

Today's task is some rugby themed colouring! Choose a picture that you like, put on some of your favourite music and use crayons, pencils, felt tips(!!!) or even paint to create a masterpiece!
